Singapore/Malaysia Day 11: Fish on the water

December 1, 2010
Singapore Day 11: Fish on the water

We headed to work for another busy day, and it was great. I headed back to Tampines with Matt and we got some Thai Food which was good. The exciting part was the Lemongrass Ice Cream for dessert! Very unusual. We got a box of the "Baby Donuts" (timbits/donut holes) at the mall and ate a bunch and then took the rest back to work to share. We joked about the donuts in the classroom in the afternoon and how many weird kinds there were. There was a savory cheese donut that was super weird!

In the evening, we headed out with Steve and Jon to East Coast Seafood. There were tons of non-Kosher options (d'oh) but plenty that I could eat which was great. I ordered fish, but it was unclear if you ordered by 100 gr or something. I tried to order 2 kinds of fish and the guy thought I was crazy... 2 fish?!?!?! The Black Pepper crab smelled good, and everyone else enjoyed it :) But I was very happy with my fish in Lemon Thai sauce. As it turns out it was the whole fish, so I almost ordered 2 whole fish... whoops.

We had a great view of boats in the harbour and it was a nice evening for hanging out. After a good dinner we headed back to the hotel. I was going to go out with the guys to a club but decided just to go to bed early because we have a big work day tomorrow. Awesome times!!

We headed to the "East Coast Seafood Mall" area which was right on the water. Beautiful sunset.

As usual in Singapore, they are a bazillion boats in the harbour.

Great pic of Jess

There were lots of food options at dinner despite it being a "seafood" place. Jon ordered this venison.

Everyone very serious about dinner.

Steve explaining something, Matt and Jon listening closely.

Me having a lot of trouble with the chopsticks

One of Steve's dishes

This was the Black Pepper Crab - unfortunately another non-Kosher thing I couldn't try :( But it smelled great and I think everyone else enjoyed it. I was really happy with my fish choice!

Back at my room for tea and mince tarts from Marks and Spencer.

Singapore/Malaysia Day 10: Orchard Road adventure

Singapore Day 10: Orchard Road adventure

Today I took a couple of photos on the way to work. There is an AMAZING building near the Dhoby Ghaut MRT station called "SOTA", the School of the Arts, Singapore. It's an amazing piece of architecture and some student work posted to the side of the building looks truly inspiring. I said to Matt that if we grew up in Singapore I bet we would have worked like crazy to get into that place!

For lunch I headed to Tampines Mall with Jess and Matt, on a search for this darn bathing suit for the present drive at the hotel. I was determined to find it! There was a Disney Store there and I thought we were definitely in luck - and they had an excellent pink dress with Belle on it from Beauty and the Beast, but no bathing suits!! Arrrgh! Anyway the scavenger hunt continued as I was super determined to find that girl the gift she wanted for Christmas.

We went to a Japanese place for lunch and I got some Okonomiyaki and I said "Arrigato Goziamas" to the waiters and they thought that was hilarious. I wanted one without pork or seafood, so he gave me a free "egg upgrade" which was nice. I got a Pocari Sweat (Japanese Gatorade) for lunch too which was great. After lunch we headed by a donut store called "JPops Donuts" and they had some interesting flavours: Avocado, Peanut Butter & Coffee, etc. Amazing! There was a sign for Timbits/Donut holes that said, "Baby Donuts... is born!" Hilarious.

At the end of the day Matt was tired and headed back to the hotel, and I took off on an adventure with Jess and Leila. We went to Orchard Road and to the Orchard iON mall, and it turns out you could go inside the glitter tree!! It was very cool. We spent a while wandering and trying to find "Forum" a mall with a lot of kids stuff. We kept getting different directions from different people, it was pretty crazy. But we eventually got oriented the right way and found lots of good stuff along the way. We walked by a bread/bakery store called "Bread Society" and Leila LOVED it. It was really good and I got an excellent flan with berries.

We then found Marks and Spencer and I bought my Dad a Christmas Cake there. In the single underpass between the Orchard iON mall and the other side of the road, we spent 1 hr there going between different shops, ate at like 3 places, and then finally got to the other side of the road! There was an Orange Julius there so I tried a small Mango Julius which rocked. We were almost there and finally found the Forum mall. There was a swimsuit store and it was... CLOSED!!!!!!!!! No!!!!!!! But there was a Toys R Us there and they didn't have the exact kind of suit I was looking for, but it was pretty good. It was more like a 2-piece wetsuit/surfing suit but it was good and mostly pink so I hope the girl from the present drive likes it. The lady at Toys R Us wrapped it for me which is great.

We headed back to Orchard iON area and Jess saw a sweet $8000 watch. Crazy. We got some steamed rice and the stationary store we visited gave us all HUGE shopping bags so we could carry our stuff/advertise for them. :) Whew, another exciting day and I dropped off the present with the folks at the front desk at the hotel. It was "due" that evening so I'm glad I managed to find it. Another busy day!

Amazing building for the "School of the Arts" in Singapore. Apparently this is actually a high school!! Wow. If I lived in Singapore I would have worked like crazy to get in here...

Cathay Mall near our hotel area (see how foggy the lens gets? That's allllll the humidity!)

Another view of the SOTA

Christmas Lights at the Orchard Ion Mall

Christmas tree outside of Orchard Ion

You could also walk inside the Christmas Tree! It was really cool in there.

Finally, we found a mall that sold stuff for kids so I could buy the bathing suit I was trying to find for the Christmas present drive. We saw some funny stuff there like this add for "Ergonomics for Children".

Singapore/Malaysia Day 9: Jess arrives, and New Balance Rainbow Running

Singapore Day 9: Jess arrives, and New Balance Rainbow Running

Jess and Leila arrived in Singapore last night and they are staying at the same place as us! Awesome. We met up with them for breakfast at the hotel and also ran into Mike and Simon commuting in on the MRT train! Jess and Leila are really excited to be here and it's great to see them.

This morning at work I found the New Balance Singapore twitter feed! As it turns out I missed a New Balance Warehouse Sale by 2 days, and they had the crazy "Rainbow Running" shoes from last year for $70?! Amazing. I didn't buy those in Japan because they were soooo crazy but then I thought about them for about a year so I figured I should probably try to get them now that I'm back in Asia. :) Anyhoo, I looked for a bit and found there are new Rainbow Running "Night" shoes that glow when car headlights shine on them!! There are a few new colours this year, they are insane, and there are 4 New Balance "concept stores" in Singapore so we planned to find out later.

We were going to go to Tampines Mall for lunch but it was too crazy today so instead we just headed to the North Indian vegetarian place which was good. I saw the Ice Cream bread "sandwich" guy again and got some coffee ice cream in bread, which was hilarious. We finish the first "course" today! Very exciting and work is going well. I brought lots of Canada flag pins and London Ontario pins to give out during class. That actually went over very well and people loved them!

It was raining quite a bit when we left, so we took a cab to the hotel and then to 313@Somerset, the "more accessible" mall which had the Uni Qlo in it. I got 2 plaid shirts and a cool purple hoodie. We then wandered around a bunch and saw the christmas lights and decorations on Orchard Road.

We then headed to *SCAPE, the Skate Park-Mall combination that was just off the main road. I found the New Balance Concept Store there and they had the RAINBOW RUNNING NIGHT shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are sooooooooo siccccccccck!!!!!!!!!!! These are even cooler than the ones from last year in Japan that I stupidly didn't buy. They are SO cool. I tried them on and the guy at the store motioned towards the treadmill so I tried them on there. Matt and Jess took a photo of me on the treadmill and laughed. It was fun. This was such an obvious purchase and they are so loud and so Jutan. I love them.

They had a deal where if you bought 2, the 2nd one was 50% off but they were pretty pricey and the other colour had a lot of pink on them and they were pretty girly. So I just got the one pair, and they even had my size (9.5)! Amazing. I was SO PSYCHED. I'd been going on and on about them all day and Matt said, "So I guess this is all we're talking about today?" Haha.

After some more wandering we ended up back at Ngee Yuan City and we went back to the same Crystal Jade XLB place that Matt and I really liked. I tried "Coke Light" - the Diet Coke of Singapore. It was good stuff!!

After dinner we did some more wandering as stores were starting to close. We went back to the hotel and went to sleep early after a day of too much excitement. :) The hotel is having a "Donate a gift to a child in need" program so I signed up to get a gift for a girl named Khalisah who is age 9, from Serangoon. Her note said, "My dream gift for Christmas is a pink swimming costume (small size)". Ascott Hotels is doing this christmas present drive and I couldn't find it yet but I'll go on an adventure tomorrow and try to find it. It's fun to have a sort of treasure hunt and I think it's going to be tough to find but it'll be cool to go on an adventure and try!

Funny Singapore campaign for courtesy, this sign asks people to give their seat to someone who might need it more than them.

Beautiful street Christmas lights at Orchard Road

We found the Rainbow Running shoes at the New Balance store!!!!!!

Soooooooo awesome

Singapore/Malaysia Day 8: Kuala Lumpur, Markets

November 28, 2010
Malaysia Day 8: Kuala Lumpur, Markets

After a busy day yesterday and lots of transportation-related mishaps like getting stuck in the rainforest, we decided to keep the "off the grid" travel to a minimum to make sure we'd actually get back to the airport in time for our flight.

We started off with an early morning wakeup in an attempt to go up the Petronas Towers. We got up at 7 and walked to the Petronas Towers for a ticket pickup, and we arrived about 7:20 or so. It was a long line already and we made the most of it by making friends with some British dudes. They were just in Thailand and Laos and said Thailand was good, but they were upset with the vibe in Laos. They went to a river where you could do tubing down the river ("We could do that kind of thing at home", they said), and there were many restaurants that were all carbon-copies of each other, with the same menus. They saw kids helping to sell drugs and this was very upsetting, they said. It was interesting to hear their perspectives. They were stopping by KL for a few days before heading to Australia for 6 months - I suggested a bunch of cool things they could do in Australia.

We were in line for about 2.5hrs and it was still at least 45 min wait before we got to the front. The line was moving excruciatingly slow as there were only 1 or 2 ticket booths open and each transaction took 3-5 minutes. Matt calculated in his head how long we'd have to wait but we decided to try our luck anyway. At the 2.5 hr mark though we decided it was definitely a "sunk cost" and we might not even end up with a ticket that let us go up before we'd have to leave for the airport (they were selling tickets for specific times in the afternoon, and the longer you were there, the later your time slot would be.) We decided the potential trip up the Petronas Towers was not worth missing the obvious win of the included hotel breakfast. So we dumped the line and hauled it back to our hotel for breakfast!!

That turned out to be an excellent choice, and it was awesome food again. I had some weird fruit (I think it was Jackfruit) and it was pretty gross, but the Starfruit was amazing. I tried Kiwi juice, Mango juice, and an orange/graprefruit/banana smoothie. I tried something dipped in the orange-chocolate fountain, a mini samosa, a made-to-order omelet, some smoked macarel, and a yellow, spiced, grilled tomato. I'm really glad we chose to forgo the huge line and potentially missing both the towers AND the breakfast and just went for the breakfast. SO GOOD!!!!

We then packed up and checked out. I took a few silly "Perspective Photos" of me and the Petronas Towers, inspired by Sarah Evans and her similar photos. We took a quick visit to the mall and Matt looked at some Quiksilver KL shirts too. We then took the train to one stop away from KL Sentral to "Central Market". Lonely Planet was wrong AGAIN! The book made it sound like Central Market was super dodgy and you had to really watch out for pickpockets and people were ready to rip you off at every store, which wasn't really the case at all. It was fun, nice, and most things had pretty reasonable prices. Once you told someone you weren't interested, they left you alone. It was pretty good there and was not "essential to bargain" as Lonely Planet had suggested. Weird. Anyway we had a great time! I got a funny "Happy Cat" figure for my shelf at home and a nice hand-made pottery necklace. I found a bubble tea place and got a passionfruit/mango smoothie. I also saw some street vendors selling juice "to go" in plastic bags with a straw poked into the bag - I'd heard that existed and it was very funny to see it.

We then headed back to KL Sentral and found an email place where we could check our messages. Facebook had some FIERCE verification steps!! This was the first time we'd logged in from Malaysia and it was really intense, you had to successfully guess friends names in photos of them from their albums - lots of extra security I guess.

There was a KLIA Express train/bus ticket we could buy and it worked out well to jump on the train and then switch to the bus to get back to the airport. We found a small McDonalds and got a Milo McFlurry which was great. The KLIA express was amazingly nice and also very comfortable and had free WiFi. We switched to the bus transfer that was waiting for us at one of the stations and it took us to the LCC-T terminal where our plane was leaving from.

We were nice and early to the terminal so we wandered and got a cheese sandwich. I also found a Cadbury Top Deck at the chocolate store. We converted our leftover money back to Singapore Dollars and checked in. We headed to the gate area and hung out there for a while, spending the last amount of change on candy. The plane ride back was very quick - we got into the plane quite early and we were back to Singapore in 40 minutes!! Amazing.

It was a great trip to Kuala Lumpur and especially interesting to compare and contrast Singapore and Malaysia. The biggest difference I noticed in a couple of days (note to the reader, this is obviously a generalization and just based on an initial impression), is epitomized in the shirt I saw at the Quiksilver store which said, "Malaysia says 'Relax-lah'". There was generally a pretty chill attitude which was OK - as long as you're not in a rush or need to get somewhere during a Monsoon storm!! In general it felt like Malaysia (surprisingly, even in KL itself) was running at a different pace than Singapore and western nations. In general, the transport and infrastructure was way behind Singapore. The regular train was not all that efficient or a fast mode of transportation - for the trip to FRIM we should have just taken a cab there from downtown instead of a train and then a cab. For some reason, the KLIA express train from the airport was very modern and very organized - it seemed like probably a lot of investment had gone into that project.

On the way back to the airport I saw a sign for the town of "Shah Alam" which is hilariously close to the name of my friend Shahana from work, so I took a photo for her. That was awesome. And then we headed back to Singapore! I was excited to see Jess from work as she had just arrived and she is also going to be teaching in the Singapore office. As it turns out she is also staying in the same hotel as us!

Starting off the day right, with a Thai Red Bull :)

Another amazing breakfast at the hotel. The Papaya was the best I've ever tasted and so ripe and awesome.

Wow best French Toast ever!! Not exactly Malaysian food, but WHOA it was good.

Great times at the hotel

Close-up of the Petronas Towers

Haha silly shot taken for Sarah... good call Sarah - these "perspective shots" were fun :)

Another silly shot of me and the Petronas Towers

Christmas and Star Wars decorations at the Adidas Originals Store

Haha this "Santa" was just a fat mannequin with a beard!

A man at the subway station and a KFC traincar

Central Kuala Lumpur

I really like this photo. Seems like some sort of abandoned parking lot with pending construction signs on it. It was so close to the KLCC but again, another stark contrast to the glitz and glamour of KLCC.

Some street graffiti

More street art

Then we stumbled upon some sort of Malaysian wedding expo, I think?!

Some amazing clothes

Loved that this guy with the spear was talking on his cell phone

Strange and cool building

Probably my favourite photo of the whole trip. These two held their pose so politely for me while I took 3 or 4 photos of them.

People checking out the displays at what I think was a bridal expo!!

Beware!

I was trying the whole trip to get a photo of one of these street signs. Shahana - this one's for you :)

Awesome huge mosque on the way back to the airport

We got Milo McFlurries at the airport before heading back to Singapore. This menu shows the funny things I bought the night before: "Ayam Goreng McD" and the "Shaker Fries". Awesome!!

Singapore/Malaysia Day 7: Videos

Today was an amazing day for taking photos and videos. Here's one of Matt and Me walking in the FRIM Rainforest, and another one at the AMAZING Batu Caves hindu temple (lots of monkeys and a rooster too?!)

A very hot and sweaty walk through the amazing Forest Research Institute of Malaysia rainforest - outside of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

An amazing walk up the stairs of the Batu Caves Hindu Temple and into the cave temple. Monkeys on the way up the stairs and some roosters and chickens in the cave! Awesome adventure and an unbelievable experience.
