Alright folks, it's official. I am hooked on The Office. I watched a good 6 episodes yesterday and today I watched another 3 and it's so insanely fantastic that I want to run around the block with a megaphone yelling "The Office freakin' rocks!!!"
Today was again totally nuts. I had 3 hours of sleep last night (oops) and then today we did our debate in class for Social Implications of Computer Science and it was fannntastic. Yung and I were incredibly well prepared I think and the class really enjoyed it I think. People really got into it and it was awesome to see people really interested in the issues. This was on student software piracy and if it is ethical behaviour or not. Then I worked out for an hour or so, then dropped off a scholarship form for a scholarship I just applied to. Then some lunch, then class. Then I went to Joel's house and finished watching Psycho and then watched Planet of the Apes. These are for our Soundtracks in Film class. Then we went to Soundtracks in Film tonight. Then back home, chillin' for a bit, watched John Stewart and Stephen Colbert, ate a bunch of food, hung out for a bit and then watched 3 more episodes of The Office. Oh man I love that show.
Now it's 4:15am again and I am still up. Tomorrow I am going skiing and it is going to be awesome, and I'll be spending some time in Toronto this weekend which is great too. Alright, now I gotta get some sleep and not watch another 2 episodes of The Office.
3D computer animation, travel, film, photography, technology, health, life, inspiration... and a few extra helpings of enthusiasm. ;)

The Office roooccckssss
Today was actually kinda nuts. I had a nice day at school, some JSA Bagel Brunch and then off to class. Then back home and wrote my speech for my CS 492 Debate tomorrow in class. Good times. Then I wrote yet another essay in the series of multiple 2,000 word essays for CS 492. Crazy. So that was tonight.
Then I realized I hadn't written up my application for another final scholarship I was going to apply to. It's due tomorrow, so I had to whip that up quickly.
Then I realized that "The Office" is freakin' amazing. I watched 2 episodes last night... tonight I watched about 4 more of them. Ohhhhh maaaaaaaan. The whole cast is awesome. It's totally brilliant. I've seen the British one too a couple of times, and I think my parents would like the British one better. But I totally love the American one, it's fantastic. I just saw the first season basketball game one and it was so funny I was trying not to laugh out loud 'cause it's like 4am and my roommates are asleep.
So why am I up at 4:12am? Watching too many episodes of The Office. Well I guess I need a replacement for The O.C. since it ends next week. :) Also I suppose Scrubs will only be on for maybe 1 more Season after this, so I gotta get some good comedy writing in the mix. Talking about good comedy writing, I really hope Michael Arndt wins the Oscar for Little Miss Sunshine. That movie is legendary.

Sweet deals
Good times today, again not a lot of work at school but I made it to the JSA Meeting again tonight and I really like how it is being run this term. The Shabbat dinners are pretty awesome and we have another Bagels and Lox lunch this week that I am helping out with. Good times!! Making some headway on figuring out what's next after Unversity too. It's all pretty stressful stuff as it's really hard to decide what's a good decision and what could be a better decision, so I am kinda getting worked up a lot about this stuff. Either way hopefully I can book my Europe trip soon and then at least that'll be settled!! Hehe so it's 1:25am, I've got class tomorrow at 8:30 but I want to get started on my essay, I've got another 2,000 word essay due soon, it's about the impact of mobile devices in the workplace. :) So should be pretty interesting but I gotta get rollin' on that. Maybe I'll just get a few ideas down now and then write it tomorrow night.
Ahh man I just realized I haven't written back to Matt Lausch or Jer or Matt from first year and a bunch of other people. The past week has been nuts!! I gotta write to those boys and get some stuff sorted out. Looks like we're going Skiing this weekend and also Alex and I are going to hang out in Toronto for a day or two which will be awesome. We've got reading week next week which is great - this is the first year that CS and Engineers actually get the whole week off!! So that is totally awesome and I am going to take advantage of the break and head to Toronto for a bit. Should be a nice break from all the stuff I've been working on lately.

Some recent pics from Bomber
It's been a super busy week but I thought I'd post some photos of friends from Bomber and from a party we had over the weekend. It's been kinda nuts lately trying to get some things sorted out in my head about what I want to do when I graduate... first though I'm heading to Europe for 3 months for a sweeeet backpacking trip so I am pretty psyched for that. Looking forward to changing gears for a couple of months after 5 years of crraazy Waterloo. :) Good times. Anyhoo, took a couple of breaks this weekend and hung out with some friends which was super fun.

Whhaaatt uppppp!!!!

Me with Sumeet and Diana

Rockin' at Bomber with a popped collar

Ran into Katie from VOC at Bomber last week!!

Emma trying to do an "angry smile" but still just looking really happy

Me looking kinda confused, and Joel and Patty chillin'

Real life is starting soon...
I kindof just came to the conclusion this week that "Real life" is starting very soon. I know that sounds totally ridiculous because of course I am living my "Real life" now... but I think I've finally come to that stage in a 4B-term student's life when they realize that soon the 4-month Work, School, Work, School bouncing back and forth is finally coming to a close and that the next decision for where you work will determine a whole bunch of things about your life in the future... for the short-term and for the long-term. This is NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So yes that's what my week has been like. It's been stressful and scary and ahhhh!! It's getting to the point where I might have a few different decisions to make, each one being potentially a great decision and with pros and cons for all possibilities. This is nuts. As my good buddy Jake has said to me, "School is linear, and it's all planned out. Real Life is a lot different." At school. you do your assignments, you hand them in, you get marks back. At the end of the term (in the case of a Waterloo kid like me), you go for your awesome work term. Then after that you come back to Waterloo and start it all over again. This is a very linear, focused, planned-out scenario. Now when you get to the real world finally when you're done school, it doesn't work on the "Term by Term" system. I am going to have to get myself out of thinking that this is the case.
Either way, although this is a time when I might have to make some decisions that I am unsure about, I think that whatever decision I make I'll be happy with it. And also, generally, long gone are the days when you stay at one job for 40 years and then retire. So if things aren't as I am hoping for at one place, I can potentially move at a later date if that makes sense and is fair to my employer. Ohhh man, what a lot of hard decisions I need to make in the next little while. It's hard because some of these eventual options will have pros and some will have cons and most will be a combination. It's going to be really tough to make up a solid decision about what to do, since it affects so much around me and about my future. Oy. Anyway when the time comes to make the decision, hopefully things are all sorted out and it'll be easier to make then. I'll surely be posting details on here if it makes sense to, or if I just want to talk about this to my awesome blog-reading crowd.
So that's what's going on in my head this week. Also got a bunch of assignments back from school and man it's going well this term. My classes are pretty light so I am still finding LOTS of time to work out and socialize and so on, and also get all my work done. I got my Music test back and totally rocked it, sweeeet. Also it appears that my essay on Electronic Monitoring for Social Implications of Computer Science was well-received. Good times!!
Well it's 2:20am. I got like 5 hours of sleep last night at the most and had class alllll day. Tonight we went to Bubble Tea and got soup and dumplings and played cards for like 3 hours. It was fannntastic. For Soundtracks in Film (my Music class), we watched Psycho today before class and we didn't quite finish it but man it was intense.
So this week hasn't had much work to do, but I've more been freaking out a lot about the fact that I am finishing up school very soon and it's all kindof hitting me this week. Crrraazy. This trip to Europe is going to be the best idea ever. After 5 years of work-school-work-school back and forth with at most 2 or 3 weeks off at one time in between terms (and often just 2 days off), I think it's clear that I need a few months to take some time off. Yeah that's nuts. The most "vacation" I've had in the past 5 years has been 2 weeks at a time. Crazy!!!! So I think I am going to enjoy backpacking an extra-huge amount after this crazy school!! Good times though, as nuts as this ride at Waterloo has been, I've really enjoyed the people here and a lot of times the work has been very interesting, it's always been very intense, and I think I will actually miss this place once I am outta here. But for now, just rockin' through the term and trying to enjoy it as much as possible... and get my fitness back to a decent level (finally) and get to see lots of friends while they are here. Good times.

Brr... Canada!!
Hehe well it's finally winter. We've had a few decently cold days, one a few weeks ago that was -21 (-26 with windchill) but today is the worst so far. It's -17 right now, and with windchill it's at -29!! Going down to -30 by tonight!! (For my American homeys that -22 Fahrenheit) So yes I think I am staying inside again for most of the day. Looks like it's a snowsquall warning too, blizzards tonight and "possible whiteout conditions"... oh man this country is nuts. :)

Finished XLib GUI Builder in Java
Whhaattt upppppppppppp!!
Today was sweeeeet. Last night I coded my UI Assignment from 5pm until about 2am... then watched a bunch of Scrubs and listened to some good tunes. Today I got up at Noon, and coded from 1pm until about 10:30pm and finished my readme file and did a whole bunch of testing etc!! I'm done!! Wahoo!!!! So that was quick, maybe only about 15 hours of coding, so about the same as the first assignment. I now have a GUI Builder that I made in Java, which allows you to create a Button, a Checkbox and a Label, and then automatically builds a UI in XLib to exactly match the GUI that you made visually in Java. Good times!!

Java GUI Builder that I created on the left. On the right is the result of clicking the "Write Code" button in the Java GUI Builder - a UI in XLib that matches what you visually specified in the Java program. Good times!!

I also did a code view that shows you the current code that the Java program has created to match what you have created in the Design View.

Me and Joel on YouTube
Joel and I were filmed last week for the campaign video for Team eX, which are a few people from Waterloo who rock and are aiming their sights at the Feds (Waterloo Student Council) office positions.
Anyhoo, the question was, "What can 'eX' do for you?"
Notice how Joel and I are in the Bubble Tea place, as usual. I appear to be wearing fancy clothes - just to keep it real. :) The direct link is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXmsgs9RT78 if this video below doesn't work.

Norm's cats
One more post before I go to bed. My sister Norma sent me pics of her 3 year old cat Adam and her new kitten Ben. Man this is cute.

Adam squishing into a box because Ben was playing in it, and he wanted to play too!! Hahahaha hilarious.

XLib GUI Builder in Java, and some good tunes
Tonight was sweet. It's a Friday night, and while most people would be a bit annoyed at being "stuck" inside programming for an upcoming assignment due date... I am having an awesome time!!!!!! Haha yes, I realize the relative nerdiness of the last comment, but I'm certainly cool with it, cause tonight rocked. Also... if I finish this sooner, I can go to Bomber and see some of my friends tomorrow night and bust a move. So with every step closer in my programming tonight, I am another step closer to relaxing this weekend!!
I started my UI Assignment this afternoon at about 5pm which was a bit nuts because it's due on Monday. I usually never do this for CS Assignments but this one is not too tricky, and all my friends told me it would be ok to start a bit later. This is good 'cause I was up until 4am every single night this week with work from other classes (see previous posts, and the "Man I'm tired" comments!!) Anyway... good times!!
This assignment is a GUI builder that I coded in Java, and the purpose is to build a nice fancy and pretty GUI builder for XLib! This is of course totally cool because we had to hand-code this XLib stuff for Assignment 1 and it was nuts. So now we get to spend about the same amount of time making a general purpose GUI Builder. Very cool. It has to support creating buttons, check boxes and labels. I've got the states working now, and some of the drawing working. I've also got a fancy Properties window which allows you to enter the values in on the side of the screen. I did a clear all widgets too, and put some other stuff in the menus at the top of the screen. The small squares represent checkboxes, and the larger ones represent buttons.

GUI Builder
Also while I've been programming tonight, I've spent a lot of time listening to some sweet tunes. So it turns out that a song called "9 Crimes" by Damien Rice is really good. Even better is Xavier Rudd, man I am listening to him right now and man this dude rocks.
So a successful night of programming, watching like 3 episodes of The Simpsons, and listening to some awesome tunes. Rock on. Hopefully tomorrow I can finish the assignment and then move onto other stuff like hangin' out with friends and playing some guitar maybe this weekend.

Busy week almost done, Scholarships, Paris, Cinque Terre
What a busy day again today. I got to bed at 4am after studying for my Music Midterm. Then the usual early morning 7:45am wakeup. Yung and I went to class and then I headed off to work out like crazy for 2 hours. It was intense and awesome but soooo tiring. I talked to the super nice personal trainer and she was awesome and helped me out with a question I had. Sweet deals.
Then after working out, I went to class and then off to review for my Music Midterm. Then to a movie screening for my Music class. Then time off for dinner. Then off to Music class, with the 1 hour Midterm and then a 1.5 hour class afterwards. Then to Bubble Tea with Joel and Yung and Nick and that was sweeeeet and we were there until 12:30. Then finnnally coming home for the first time since I left this morning!! Insane!!
Anyhoo, I had those 2 essays due today so I handed those in which was nice. After finishing the Midterm tonight (it was sweeeet) I am mostly done the major work for the week. I have a UI Assignment for Monday which I have to start programming tomorrow asap, but it should be pretty groovy and it's in Java, so no worries there. Gotta remember not to keep using C++ Syntax in there though, i.e. it's "null" and not "NULL", and this whole "new" thing without using pointers. Weird times. Man it's been like a year and a half since I last rocked some Java coding, so it'll be nice to get that going again.
But it's not all work and no play on my plate this week. I've been thinking there is yet another scholarship at Waterloo that I think I am probably kindof a weird unique candidate for, there are like 4 restrictions and somehow I meet all of them. It's for Waterloo Co-op Students who did a Co-op in another country, got a certain ranking for the work term, have a certain average, and do a bunch of extra-curricular stuff too. Good times. So I am going to go for it, I've got to get my application done soon, and I have no idea how it works if you win a scholarship sometime after you're done here, hopefully they just mail you a cheque. :) Anyway I am going to apply for sure.
In other news I totally didn't realize that Cannes Film Festival is in France when I am there. Also I totally want to check out 14, Boulevard des Capucines, a location in Paris where the first moving picture was ever shown to a public audience by the Lumiere Brothers. We just learned about this in Music class and I'm interested to see the area. The website is at: http://www.festival-cannes.org/
Also, what's the DEAL with this place, looking so beautiful and all?!?!

Cinque Terre - "Five Villages" in Italy
Cinque Terre is in Italy and maaaaaaaaan it looks sweeeeet! Here's a quote from Wikipedia.
Lausch and Finlayson - This is on the itinerary for a bunch of May/June when hopefully you guys will be arond!!!!
Haha, yeah hopefully my buddies Matt and Alex can come and hang out in Italy for a week or two, and I think it would be really cool to see Cinque Terre with them maybe and also of course Rome and Venice and so on. Good times!!!!!!!!
So that's about it, I've been sleeping 4 hours most nights this week, I think 7 hours for one of the nights. So it's not too bad but it's catching up with me and it's been a pretty busy week. Looking forward to next week after I finish UI cause then it should be much more relaxed. Also maybe going on a Skiing Trip with Alex, or just going to hang out with Alex in Toronto and stuff.

Cinque Terre is in Italy and maaaaaaaaan it looks sweeeeet! Here's a quote from Wikipedia.
The Cinque Terre are five coastal villages in the province of La Spezia in the Liguria region of Italy. "Discovered" by foreigners in the late 20th century, they have come to be among the most popular areas of Italy among tourists. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all encapsulated in a national park by the same name.Man I can't wait to hang out there, it sounds totally amazing.

My America Photo Contest website
Earlier this month I sent in my photo submission for the My America Photo Contest through CDS International, Inc., my Visa Sponsor to the U.S.A. Most of you have probably seen these pictures already but here they are in super-high res if you are interested.
Check it ooout.

Lots of homework today but wow I got a lot done. Last night I was also up until 4am like tonight, and finished my History essay and my ActSci lecture and my ActSci assignment. Then I got 4 hours of sleep and schlepped to school fro 8:30am class, and then did my 2 hour workout today in between class. I am insane.
Tonight I started my CS essay but had to take an hour nap because I couldn't pay attention and was so tired. But after that and plenty of food I got back into the essay and researched and wrote the 2,000 word CS essay tonight!! Insane. I am sooo glad I got it finished. I've got a bunch of stuff this week so it's been great to rock through most of it over the past 3 days. Tomorrow I've got to study for Music but then that is the end of the huge amount of work from this week which is nice. A couple of things for next week but it won't be as nuts at this week which is always good. I'd like to go to Toronto and hang out with Matt and Alex this week but I still have too much to do. Maybe I'll see them on one of the days or maybe just another weekend instead. We'll see how it goes I guess!! Great JSA Bagels and Lox lunch again today. Man that stuff is good.

Barack Obama is awesome
Well I've only seen him speak twice on TV. But I really think this guy could change the world.
http://www.barackobama.com/
I sure hope he decides to run for US President next year. I think the polls say at the moment that he has a good chance of becoming the head of the Democratic Party and then he would be running against the Republican candidate next November for President.
What a change this would be to America's world opinion. I think it would be AWESOME to see Barack Obama as President, man he sure is an impressive speaker and it sure looks like he cares about his country a whole lot...
Let's hope everyone is smart enough to vote for him.

Busy week, The O.C. and Essays
Busy day today!! Last night was great and I was out pretty late with Jeremy and Joel and a bunch of friends from school, it was really fun and lots of cool people there.
Today we had a "Laundry Party" which was pretty hilarious, my Don here in Residence gave us all free laundry today which roooccked. I washed my sheets and my towel!!! Haha I kept forgetting to do that in the States and my Mom said that was gross and I should wash my towel more often cause if you don't it gets super gross and starts smelling weird. So that was a good idea I reckon!!
Anyway other than random free laundry, we went grocery shopping and I got like 5 tubs of Yoghurt. Man that stuff is legendary. Also some sweeeeet grapes today, and the usuals like tons of tomatoes and stuff. Yes, I just posted my grocery shopping on here.
Cool so yes after that I got home and then worked on homework for a good 7 hours or so. I wrote my essay for History which was super intense and I need to edit it a bunch tomorrow and tighten it up a bit. I also did an ACTSCI lecture which is good because I have an Assignment due this week and I still need to catch up on one more lecture before I can do it.
Man what a busy week coming up!! I didn't think I'd get too busy with so many reading and essay classes but wow it's nuts this week. I've got 2 essays due on Thursday, an Assignment due Wednesday, some reading to do and a Midterm for Music on Thursday!! Crazyness. Should be totally fine cause I finished one of the essays almost today, and I should be able to finish it completely tomorrow and do the assignment for Wednesday. Then Tuesday I can rock the CS Essay and then Wednesday I can study for my Music Midterm for Thursday. Haha wow yes busy week coming up. When I am finally done all this stuff I can start working on my UI Programming assignment which is due next Monday.
So other than a ton of work today, I just watched last week's episode of The O.C., man that show is AWESOME this season!!!!!! It's so intense and crazy and they really seemed to pick up the writing this season. The stories are so crazy and intricate and they are really rockin' it out. I love it. Just when it started to get good again it's been cancelled. That's too bad but at least they are doing an awesome job this season and making it really good. Also Simpsons tonight was insane too!! Man lots of good TV lately and not enough time to watch it. I saw Scrubs from a couple of weeks ago where they did the crazy musical and it was just great.
So yes I guess that's about all I've got to write at the moment, just gettin' stuff done and getting through the truckload of work!! I guess it's not too bad compared to the usual workload, so I'm sure it'll go smoothly and probably faster than I expect it to.

Good times with my Waterloo crew!
Tonight was nuts. I read lots this afternoon and finished my book for History which is great, so now I can get started on my essay tomorrow. Tonight we went to Maharaja Palace but unfortunately it's closed for renovations!! I love that place so that's too bad we couldn't eat there for dinner. Instead we went to the Heuther Hotel and it was pretty fun, junky bar food like chicken tenders but they were good. Joel and Jer were there which rooocked and Tim came in from Toronto to hang out so that was totally sweeeeeeet!! After that we went to the Princess Theatre to try to see Pan's Labyrinth but it was sold out, that was too bad but instead we went to Symposium and hung out there, I ate a legendary cherry cheesecake and it was fantastic. Talked about music and stuff and hung out a bunch with the guys... fantastic.
After this we went to the Fox & The Fiddle to hang out with Jeff for his birthday. This was nuts, we had the entire back room there and there was an AWESOME live band playing, they played tons of John Mayer and Jack Johnson songs, it was reaaaaaaally good. We played some pool, hung out a bunch and talked about a bazillion things, lots of nice people there and good friends from school and VOC (Frosh Leading) and also a lot of people I didn't know too well and it was great to get to know them a bit better. All in all, a fantastic night and plenty of cool people and awesome homeys. Man I love this socializing this term. Hehe I guess the reduction in programming classes this term is inversely correlated to my social life and my exercise. :) Ohhh man. What a great time. I spent hours and hours at JSA last night too. I am loooving JSA this term. We eventually had a discussion that when you put on Tefillin (something Jewish people wear during a certain set of prayers), you wrap it around your arm and then hold it for a moment while you affix the headpiece, and then continue wrapping the arm. The explanation was that you do this because the arm or hand represents action, the act of doing things.... and that no action can (or should) be made before the mind decides to do it. This is soooooooo awesome because I really feel like that is something I care a lot about - the idea of using your mind to judge a situation and act accordingly. The idea of looking at something or a circumstance and deciding the correct course of action based on what variables are visible and available to your decision-making abilities. Very interesting and awesome. This also ties into the common lesson "If you mess something up, it's your own fault. If you make a bad decision, you must take ownership of it, admit that you were wrong, and fix it yourself." I think too many people in the world find other people, circumstances, things, etc to blame their pitfalls on... rather than just admitting they messed up and they need to fix it.
Anyway enough of a rant for tonight, it's 3:23am and it's time for some sleep. I went to bed too late last night too so I gotta get a decent sleep tonight so I can start rockin' that essay tomorrow. Word.

Selling my Lonely Planet France guide
So I bought Lonely Planet France, Italy, Greece and Greek Islands a few months ago in the USA. I was just looking on Chapters a day or two ago to decide what to spend my Chapters Gift Certificate on... and it looks like there is a NEW Lonely Planet France guide already!! I checked when I bought mine to see if there were any new ones on the "Coming Soon" list, and none of them were there. So it looks like there was a new France one and mine is about 2 years old. This isn't a big deal usually, but the recommendations for hostels and stuff are usually much better if they are recent.
I signed up for an Amazon.ca MarketPlace account, this is kindof like Half.com or Ebay for selling books, and I am going to sell my old one for much less than other people, so the "upgrade" price to the new edition should only be a few dollars for me. Good times!
I also started looking at some flights to France and it looks like there might be a few places that have great deals. Looks like I can definitely get a return flight Toronto to Paris for about $600 or $700 Canadian which is pretty sweet. Also I have to decide soon if Spain and Portugal are going to be added to my travel destinations. I'm not sure as I want to spend a lot of time in Greece too. I guess I better get started on the reading of these books and planning my trip soon!! Oh maaaaaaan it is going to be awwwwwwesssooome!!!!!!!!!!

Math Awards Banquet 2007
Wow today was nuts!!!!!!!!!!
Here's my day... go to bed at 3:45am after a night of dancing at Bomber. Wake up at 7:50am to go to class. Coffee. 1.5 hour debate-style discussion lecture. Hanging out with Yung for a bit. 1.5 hour full workout at the Gym. Lunch, more coffee. Reading for History. History class. Walk home. Snack. Reading for 1 hour. Shower, shave, gel my hair. Pick out clothes for the Math Awards Banquet. Pack stuff for class in my jacket. Walk to South Campus Hall in the -16 Degree weather (-24 with windchill!!) Then an ammaazing fancy dinner with Profs from CS and Math and all the other award recipients! Then photo, receive my scholarship award (sweet!) Then say goodbye to the new friends at my table and run to class (already 1 hour into my night class). Arrive in class still wearing my tux jacket and name badge. Frantically scribble down Joel's notes for 20 minutes. Another 1.5 hours of class. Walk back in the cold (now -21, feels like -26 at least... for my American homeys that's about -15 degrees Fahrenheit!!) Go to Bubble Tea. Socialize with the cool people there. Drink Bubble Tea. Play cards for an hour. Get a ride home from an old friend so we don't have to walk in the cold. Console Yung and Nick from their eventful evenings. Check my email. Listen to a Dave Matthews song. Watch Ever After with Yung. Eat some more snacks. Discuss the pitfalls of modern MTV society and pop music with Yung. Convince Yung that Dave Matthews Band is the best band in the universe. And now... blog about my insane day!!!!!!!!!!!
Whew. So yes that was my day which was full of tons and tons of stuff. Man I can't believe I did all of that on 4 hours of sleep. Crazy!!
Anyhoo... here are some pics from the ammmaaaziiing Math Faculty Awards Banquet Dinner from tonight!!

L'Chayim - "To Life"
This afternoon and evening I've started to read Primo Levi's "Survival in Auschwitz", another book for my History of the Holocaust class.
As I mentioned in an earlier post about Elie Wiesel's "Night", the books in this course are really making me think a lot and I will certainly have lots to post about these and my reactions to them. I think it's important for me to share these feelings with you - thanks to Google Analytics I know I've got roughly 120 readers of this blog per week, from usually about 5-10 different countries. The majority are family and friends in U.S.A., Canada and Australia, but I've seen plenty from other countries too. I feel that - in the words of my History Professor - that it's my duty to bring attention to this important subject.
Anyway just a couple things that are swirling in my head after the first 70 pages of this book...
I have been reading all afternoon and focusing hard on my work today because tonight I am going to have fun, tonight is the best bar night of the week. Lots of friends from VOC (Frosh Leading), class, and other things I have been a part of on campus come to the Bomber, it's fun, it's exciting, it's loud - but most of all it's relaxing and a nice break from my work. Obviously this club has plenty of drinking, I don't tend to drink much or at all, mostly due to the fact that I have more fun if I don't, and for me it's not a necessity for a good night, as some people tend to view it. Either way, it's great and I love it there. Lots of friends, lots of good music to dance to, lots of good hip hop and so on. Happy times.
But reading this book this afternoon puts me in an interesting mood before going out tonight. I should be VERY thankful for this opportunity. Sure I have a lighter workload this term and thus I have more free time for "fun stuff" and hanging out with my friends. But what I mean to say is, can you imagine how much Primo Levi (author of this book) would have liked to go out in the evening, blow off studying for a night and just enjoy himself? This book hits me extra hard because the author was exactly 24 years old when he wrote the book - the same age as I am right now. Can you even imagine yourself in that situation? It's almost impossible to comprehend the fear and hatred you would have towards the people who have imprisoned you. But alas, he writes the book in a calm, pensive and a matter-of-fact kind of way. His strength through his words is clear and stunning.
So when I am out tonight, enjoying the company of my friends... I'll be sure to enjoy it just a little bit more. A "Cheers" with friends, a "L'Chayim", meaning "To Life!" How lucky I am to be living in an age where I am not persecuted for who I am, and that I have the benefit of taking the evening off from my homework, visiting with friends, and just enjoying life. This is a blessing and a right that I would not have, were I born 40 or 50 years earlier and in Europe. I think we should all be grateful for this fact, and wary that others in the world now may not have the rights that we so clearly deserve.

Winter time in Waterloo!
Well it's definitely winter! Big snowfalls over the past few days, and we even had a -14 Celsius Day already, that's about 6.8 degrees Fahrenheit for my American friends South of the Border. That is pretty mild as long as the wind isn't too nuts. There have been a few really cold days, but nothing too nuts yet. No -30's yet but I'm sure we'll get some of those soon enough. :)
Here are a few pics of the snow and also of some of my Dons making us all food, we had a Res Brunch one day and it roooccked.
Today was the JSA Bagels and Lox day and yes, it rocked. I ate so much smoked salmon that it was pretty ridiculous, but still legendary.
